Praise Team Leader

E. Lawrence Benson moved to Delaware in 1997 from a small town in Upstate New York, where he finished high school and then studied Police Science at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. He originally thought about going into law but felt a strong pull toward the ministry instead.

During the 1960s and 1970s, he connected with young adults from the “Hippie and Jesus Movements” in Denver and Houston, helping to bridge the gap between established churches and these communities. Larry decided to get a formal theological education at the Rochester School of Theology and Holy Trinity College and Seminary in Clearwater, Florida, where he earned a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree. After that, he was ordained as a priest in the Southern Episcopal Church and served in various roles throughout Central New York.

While in seminary, he picked up a minor in music and worship studies. He volunteered as a recruiter for his school and dedicated his weekends to ministering at churches in the Northeast. This work deepened his passion for utilizing his musical talents in ministry. Before relocating to Delaware, he contributed to the music programs at various churches in central New York, where he assisted in enhancing their music initiatives and increasing church attendance.

After arriving in Delaware, he joined Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, where he led worship services until the church closed in 2008. In 2012, he took on the role of Praise Team Leader at First Presbyterian Church. He has been volunteering as a chaplain at Christiana/Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland, since 2009. He also teaches martial arts and works as a substitute teacher in Cecil County.

Larry is married to Elaine and has three adult children: Melinda, David, and Rebecca. He has a keen interest in studying martial arts and enjoys playing and recording music. Both Larry and Elaine appreciate attending theater performances and visiting Longwood Gardens. They are also the proud owners of two well-trained poodles, Lily and Joey.
