Welcome to First Pres Newark

Welcome to First Presbyterian Church–Newark or, as we more often call ourselves, First Pres Newark! We have been a part of the greater Newark, Delaware community since our church’s founding in 1835. Originally located at the intersection of North Chapel Street and East Main Street (current site of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church), we moved to The Old Stone Church on West Main Street in 1872 (current site of the UD Student Center), and then to our current 14 acre property at 292 West Main Street in 1965.

Our focus has been and continues to support three central themes of Christian living: worship our Lord, grow in our faith, and serve our neighbors as Jesus commanded his followers to do. Our Vision is:

“We seek to be vibrantly active messengers of hope, bringing the caring presence of Jesus Christ and love of God into our community and the wider world.”

What Are Our Worship Services Like?

When do you meet?

Worship is on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in our sanctuary.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Depending on the weather, you will see everything from shorts, T-shirts, and casual wear up to suits and dresses. Whatever you choose to wear, you will fit in just fine!

Where do I park?

We have ample parking at First Presbyterian, and if needed we can use the lot of the Newark Country Club next door. Click here for directions via Google Maps.

How long are the worship services?

Worship services usually last about an hour, but plan on more time for fellowship afterwards!

Where do my children go during the worship service?

All children may attend any worship service with their parents, though our children’s ministry does provide childcare for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Children initially come to the sanctuary, then are dismissed to Sunday School after the children’s message time with the pastor. Per our Child Safety Policy, parents register their children the first time they visit, and accompany their children up through 5th grade to their classes. We want to make sure they feel comfortable and secure!

What will the worship service be like?

Friendly! The service begins as you enter the Sanctuary and prepare your hearts and minds for worship by greeting, sharing, and laughing with one another.

What will the music be like?

Beautiful! We have a combined service with our Chancel Choir, Praise Team, and organist working together to provide worship music drawn from a variety of genres: traditional hymns, choral anthems, and contemporary Christian songs.

What about Communion?

We have Communion once a month on the first Sunday. Everyone is welcome at Christ’s table! All baptized men, women, and children are invited to celebrate the sacrament.

Want to know more about First Presbyterian?
